Our Story

Creating utterly:

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when the idea for utterly came to existence. I think it was in the making for a long time. Fate, as some would call it.

I really honed my sewing skills after my daughter was born, when my disappointment in the quality and design of children's garments urged me to design my own clothes for her.

The seed for utterly was planted one day when a local boutique owner offered to sell my children’s wear after seeing my daughter run around the shop in her hand-made dress. As intriguing as the idea of creating and selling beautiful clothing was, it was not compelling enough for me to pursue.

That is, until I was inspired by a woman I met who reclaims vintage textile from overseas and repurposes them into women’s apparel.  Seeing her work intrigued me to do some research. I soon discovered that in the U.S. alone, around 15 million tons of textile fill landfills annually, 95% of which could be recycled and reused - some of it is even brand new. Learning this made me want to create a solution to the non-sustainable practices in the fashion industry.

That is when utterly was born. The validation from the woman at the boutique paired with my passion for fashion design and desire to make a positive impact gave me the drive to rescue this untouched fabric and build a company to revolutionize the way we think about our clothing.

Today, I am happy to say that utterly has partnered with some prominent San Francisco clothing companies who are cheerfully sending us their unwanted textile instead of throwing it away.

It has taken many people to bring the mission of utterly to life: the shop owner, willing partners, a very dedicated team, and especially our customers. We desire to grow with your family and to give parents like you a resourceful and impactful place to purchase clothing that your children and future generations will love you for.

It takes a collective effort to make a difference.

Thank you for being a part of the journey,
